Two more wines to learn about PDF  | Print |  E-mail
Malvasia- Also known as MALVASIA BIANCA, A white grape planted throughout Ancient Greece, particulary on the islands, where rich, oily dessert wines are still made from it today.

Dolcetto-
The third grape variety of Piedmont in northern Italy, and is the quickest to ripen.

I could only find four California wineries that make a wine with Malvasia Bianca. One of the wineries I found was Wild Horse Winery and Vineyards. In their tasting notes they say"Sharing a bottle of our 2006 Wild Horse Malvasia Bianca is sure to make friends who are impressed by the elegance of this varietal, one of the world's oldest cultivated grapes".

There were a number of wineries that make a wine from the Dolcetto verital. I looked at Acorn Winery and they had this to say about the Dolcetto grape "Dolcetto is a delicious dry red wine that is very popular in the Piedmont area of Italy, but it is still rare in California. We planted it in our Alegría Vineyards in 1991, and we’ve found that Dolcetto thrives in our cool Russian River Valley climate. The long growing season optimizes expression of Dolcetto’s varietal characteristics".

TR ELLIOTT- Russian River Pinot Noir Tasting PDF  | Print |  E-mail

I had an opportunity to conduct a tasting of the wines from TR ELLIOTT, who makes three Russian River Pinot Noirs, two of which are single vineyards wines.

The first wine we tasted was the Three Plumes Pinot Noir from the Hallberg Vineyard. It was clear from the start that each wine was very different in the nose, a characteristic of the single vineyard clones used and final blending. I noticed aromas of red fruit, vanilla and floral notes. This wine had a very soft finish but firm tannins.

The next wine was Burgonet from the O’Connell Vineyard. This wine had a much bigger nose with more hints of dark cherry and spice. The color was deeper and much darker than the Three Plumes.

I found this wine to have a longer finish and soft tannins. The oak was noticeable and very pleasant.

The last wine was Queste, a cuvée of 22 barrels of wine. They took 15 barrels from the Hallberg Vineyard wine and 7 from the O’Connell Vineyard wine. The result was a very well balanced and full bodied wine with hints of chocolate, blackberry and vanilla.

We hope to have the opportunity to showcase their wines in our tasting room. We all felt that a clonal tasting or blending seminar would be a big hit to the visitors of Cellars of Sonoma tasting room.
